Jody-Lan Castle is originally from Kent in the UK, although her parents are of Chinese-Malaysian and Irish descent.

She has a lot of experience volunteering with vulnerable groups, including refugees and asylum seekers, undocumented migrants and victims of human trafficking. Her work with these groups has given her an affinity with reporting stories with a human angle.

She spent 3 months in Vietnam, volunteering with autistic children and also taught English to Vietnamese offenders in HM Prison Canterbury, a foreign national prison. She was also a visitor at Dover Immigration Removals Centres, giving moral support to detainees who were facing deportation.

Developing and printing photographs by hand in a dark room during her 2 years of studying Photography gave her a love and appreciation for the artform. One of the assignments for this course led her to photographically document a group of Roma people in Rhodes, Greece.

Jody-Lan studied BA Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. In the final years of this degree she chose to focus heavily East Asian political issues and relations, and wrote a dissertation about the Kurdish struggle for independence. It also included 2 years of learning Mandarin (Chinese).

The third year was spent at the University of Hong Kong, studying modules in Social Sciences and Journalism. This time spent in Asia also allowed her time to travel widely in the continent, increasingly her interest of the region further.

While she was there, she became concerned with various issues regarding forms of discrimination for Non-Chinese locals in Hong Kong. This has led her to work on a TV documentary covering this issue in May 2012, for the final project of the MA International Journalism that she is currently studying at the University of Westminster. She has been trained to report news and documentaries in various forms of media.

Jody-Lan currently writes regularly for WeSpeakNews, an international online news website, and updates her blog 'Humanitarian Focus' frequently.
